The photographic heritage of Peter Naglič

You are cordially invited to the opening of the photography exhibition on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at 6:00 PM at the Ethnographic Museum Ljubljana

Exhibition Photographer: the photographic heritage of Petar Naglič represents part of the rich photographic legacy of the Ščeta master and photographer Peter Naglič (1883–1959) from Šmarca near Kamnik, who, while documenting with a camera in the period between the two wars, as a self-taught artist, mastered the elements of the newly developing reportage photography.

He used photography to record everything that caught the attention of his curious spirit, and documented in detail all spheres of human life, from personal events of an individual to religious, social and community life in the narrower and wider community. The beginnings of reportage photography can be seen in photographs of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem in 1910, events during the First World War at Ljubljana Castle, the Eucharistic Congress in Ljubljana in 1935, the excavation of a mammoth in Nevlje in 1938, the building renovation of Ljubljana in the 1930s, and others.

A special feature of the exhibition is the creation of a feature film of the same name, created by director and screenwriter Miha Čelar. The last sequences of the film were shot right at the opening, and the film will premiere in August 2026, when the exhibition will no longer be on view. Jože Suhadolnik also presents his view of Naglič's legacy. Using classic analogue photography
recreated five of the author's motifs and presented them in a modern interpretation.

The exhibition is also special because it rounds off a long-standing successful collaboration between the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum and Matjaž Šporar, Naglič's grandson and the guardian of his legacy. At the same time, this occasion heralds the official transfer of the valuable photographic collection under the auspices and permanent care of the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum.
