In this black and white photograph by Dušan Letnar, the author takes us into a quiet, almost frozen world of rural abandonment. The crumbling building of a forgotten barn with an exposed roof, asymmetrically placed portals on the narrow side, forgotten by life, reminds us of a former dominion that time has trampled. The presence of man is especially evident in his percentage. A plastic chair in the foreground, a palette of lounge chairs pointlessly abandoned in front of a building covered with ceramic tiles and ruins. What was once human is slowly becoming nature.
Letnar's composition judiciously combines elements of nature, architectural decay and everyday objects into a quiet but powerful visual narrative. The intrigue of the narrative is continued by the atypically placed stone blocks. Placed? Fallen from the sky? Their presence does not provide an answer. The use of black and white technique further deprives the scene of any sentimentality and emphasizes the structures, textures and contrasts that would otherwise remain in the background. The photograph thus subtly but precisely speaks of the passing, solitude and silent decay of the human world in the embrace of nature.
