PULFRFABRKA Dušan Letnar

You are invited to the opening of the independent photography exhibition PULFRFABRKA by our photographer Dušan Letnar, which will be held in the Glass Atrium of the Ljubljana City Hall (Mestni trg 1) on Thursday, August 29. 2024 at 7 p.m.

A gunpowder factory once operated in Kamnik, which, due to its political and economic importance, was a forbidden area for many years - a kind of place within the city. Ever since the middle of the 19th century, explosives as well as products for civilian use have been produced in the gunpowder factory, or powder factory, as the locals call it. Although factories such as the gunpowder mill are usually considered key state infrastructure - this is the status that the Kamnik gunpowder mill had in all past regimes - for the time of the current regime, in which parliamentary democracy and the free market are legalized, but in reality manifest as a partyocracy and collusive capitalism, the factory collapsed and stopped working. The story of the Kamnik gunpowder mill is very similar to the story of the whole of Europe, which is being irresistibly turned into a museum and tourist attraction by decades of deindustrialization.

Photographer Dušan Letnar documented the process of the factory's collapse in 2014. As a Kamničan and an engaged photographer who in his practice follows changes in the social fabric of his immediate surroundings, he created an extraordinary archive of images that bear witness to what is happening in the city and its surroundings. The Pulfrfabrka transformed before his eyes. In his photographs, it is therefore possible to notice elements of the classic transition, typical of post-socialist countries, which is based on the transfer of former public property into private hands.
