The group exhibition Caught in the Moment presents young Slovenian photographers who found themselves in the snapshot aesthetic. Snapshots are those spontaneous shots where the attitude towards the subjects is more relaxed. They are created in a moment, which is well summed up by the Czech term for snepšot - momentka. With them, we immortalize people and places that have a deeper meaning for us and are the building blocks of our personality. Such recordings are universal, as they depict moments that are familiar to all of us and with which we can identify. The Snepšots are concerned with showing life and not with reforming.
In the past few decades, snepšots have undergone a real revolution, as they were initially intended for a closed circle of people who, through the images in the photographs, affirmed their own social ties - whether family or friends, and confirmed their identity. We usually paint at symbolic moments in our family life, a time when we recognize our relationship and social achievements. These are the moments we want to keep, emotionally and visually. Snapshots serve to frame our memory, as images help us create a visual diary that acts as a memory device. Home recordings help us preserve memories of details that fade over time, while recordings remain. Even if we showed the photos to outside observers, they were still selected people and not the general public, which started to happen with digitization and the emergence of the Internet. All of a sudden, a genre of photography intended for a private circle of people has reached the wider online public, thus triggering a new discourse that places the function of communication before remembrance.
The exhibition focuses on snapshots as seen by young photographers, it is a collection of different motifs with different approaches – minimalist shots, humorous situations, intimate family moments and friendships. They are documents of the life of each individual author, thus allowing us insight into their world of moments.
The exhibition can be viewed until May 28, 2014 during the official hours of the Kamnik House of Culture (Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from Tuesday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
