About the Photo Club

Photo club Kamnik is a voluntary and non-profit association that deals with digital and analog photography. It was founded in December 2004 on the initiative and desire of some young Kamnik residents - amateur photographers who wanted to fill the void in this field in Kamnik. The club premises - a fully equipped studio, where members' meetings are also held, a darkroom and a cabinet with a library - were arranged in Kamnik Cultural Center, where we also run a gallery, where domestic and foreign authors have exhibited in recent years. Between 2009 and 2014, we organised the very successful Exposed photography competitions, in which five thousand photographers from all over the world participated in five years. Gallery activity is one of the main activities of the Kamnik Photo Club, and the Kamnik Cultural Centre gallery is the only one in the wider area dedicated solely to photography. Since 2011, we have been collaborating with the Photon Gallery and at the Fotonični trenutki festival, where we have exhibited our own works by members and photographs by foreign authors.

Our collaboration with the France Balantič Kamnik Library is also very successful, which enables us to establish a mobile collection that is entirely thematically dedicated to photography. More than 200 units of book material not only serve members, but also contribute significantly to the spread of knowledge about photography.

Among the club activities, it is worth highlighting the fully equipped studio and darkroom, which are used by members with great benefit. The darkroom allows us to fully immerse our members in digital photography and also to inspire them with the charm of working with the classic analog process. The darkroom, which is available to every member at any time, was the main incentive for those who have only recently become acquainted with analog photography to encounter it. The same applies to the studio, where, with the help of trained members, we ensure that technical knowledge is passed on to less experienced users. There is also space in the office for a digital darkroom, which we will equip with modern computers and software in the near future, or as long as our funds allow.

We also spread knowledge among members through organized lectures, workshops and excursions. Shorter lectures and workshops on a wide variety of topics are prepared either by the members themselves or by inviting established photographers and lecturers. For members, we organized a year-long workshop on authorial photography with Peter Rauch, a lecturer at the College of Services - Department of Photography and the Academy of Fine Arts. Janez Suhadolnik, a long-time photojournalist and photography editor at the Delo newspaper, prepared a portrait photography workshop. We hosted the legend of Slovenian photojournalism, Joco Žnidaršič, etc.
In addition to galleries in the nearby area, we organize excursions every year during the months of photography in Vienna and Bratislava, and every two years we visit the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Venice.

In addition to spreading knowledge about photography and socializing in the same interest group, the goals of the club are also the promotion of the local community through connecting with various local and photographic societies and related institutions throughout Slovenia and across borders.
In 2024, we gained the status public interest associations.

Equipment

We have a fully equipped studio with several backdrops and studio flashes and related equipment, a fully equipped darkroom with three enlargers and all the necessary chemistry, a library, a gallery, and a scanning and processing room.

How to become a member

Anyone who wants to learn about photography and participate in club projects can become a member of the club. We invite people who consider photography more than just a hobby and would like to progress in this medium and be recognized as an author. The condition for membership is a completed application form and paid annual membership fee. Club members meet as needed, usually on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM. For more information, contact us at fotoklubkamnik@gmail.com or, via the form that appears when you enter the page, sign up to receive news and notifications regarding activities and broader information related to photography and cultural events in this part of the world.
